April Virtual Beverages & Tutelage Presentation
The Portland Chapter of the International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants (IIBEC Portland Chapter) invites all design professionals, consultants, and contractors practicing in the roofing, waterproofing and building enclosure fields to attend a live webinar educational presentation on R-Value Optimization for Roof Systems.
The energy codes mandate minimum R-value requirements; architects and designers specify minimum code-required R-Values for roof systems. Are we actually achieving the R-Value that is code-required and specified? The way the insulation is attached can significantly alter the ‘installed’ R-value. This presentation will discuss research on the effect that fasteners have on the R-Value of insulation and provide a cost-based analysis of various alternative attachment methods and system designs. To round out the presentation, the effects of roof color and air barriers will be briefly discussed.
The three key objects are:
- Recognize that fasteners are thermal bridges and their effect on the installed R-Value of roof systems
- Comprehend that alternate attachment methods can significantly reduce the long-term impact on the R-Value of roof systems
- Understand the additional components (roof color and air barriers) needed to design an energy efficient roof system
Speaker: James R. Kirby, AIA Building & Roofing Science Architect
James R. Kirby, AIA, is a GAF building & roofing science architect. Jim has a Masters of Architecture—Structures Option, and he is a licensed architect. He has nearly 30 years of experience in the roofing industry covering low-slope, steep-slope, metal, SPF, vegetative, and rooftop photovoltaics. He understands the effects of heat, air, and moisture on a roof system. Jim presents building & roofing science information to architects, consultants, and building owners, and he writes articles and blogs for building owners, facility managers, and the roofing industry at-large. Kirby is a member of AIA, ASTM, ICC, IIBEC, NRCA, and WSRCA.
